Appleton, Victor – Tom Swift Jr 16 – And the Cosmic Astronauts

Tom added that rebels were now trying to take over the country, and, if they succeeded, Li Ching would be welcome to return. In the meantime, he had become a menace to the world. Although his name was almost unknown to the general public, intelligence reports indicated that Li Ching was now carrying on what he called “reprisal actions” against top scientists of other countries whom he blamed for his ousting. He was also engaged in 11

sabotage work for the rebels against his own nation.

Sandy gasped as Tom described a few of Li Ching’s exploits. “What a gruesome character to come up against! He sounds like a-a sort of international octopus 1”

“He gets around,” Tom agreed grimly.

Mr. Swift frowned. “That would certainly explain the Sea Charger’s being sunk,” he murmured thoughtfully. “An act of pure destruction! It fits in with reports of Li Ching’s tactics, Tom. I think we should mention your idea to Security.”

“Right, Dad. I’ll do it now.”

Tom excused himself from the table and phoned Harlan Ames. The security chief promised to check at once with the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington for any clues to Li Ching’s latest activities.

When Tom returned to the dining room, his mother said worriedly, “Goodness, I hope you two Toms aren’t becoming involved in another dangerous adventure.” Outwardly brave and calm at all times, Mrs. Swift often felt pangs of fear for the safety of “her two inventors.”

“Don’t worry, Mother.” Tom gave her a quick hug. “I doubt if Li Ching would dare show his face in the United States.”
