CHAPTER I
THE DEVIL DOLL
“What do you call this automatic skywriter?” asked Bud Barclay.
His friend Tom Swift Jr. was piloting a new helicopter over Lake Carlopa. The strange-looking craft was emitting a stream of red luminous gas.
“Watch,” said Tom. “As 1 trace words with a stylus on this sensor panel, a computer will steer the ship and sky write the message.”
In a moment the ship was turning and maneuvering so that its luminous stream formed the words:
THIS IS THE NEW SWIFT GRAPHICOPTER
“Wow! An advertiser’s dream!” Bud exclaimed.
The two eighteen-year-olds were seated in the control cabin atop the twin-rotored craft. Its fuselage was shaped like a huge TV set, with the skywriting equipment inside.
Suddenly Bud gasped as he saw a plume of smoke rise from the Forest Park Reservation across the lake. “Good night! A forest fire!”
Tom, a rangy youth with a blond crew cut, gunned the graphicopter toward the woods. An updraft of heated air buffeted the ship as it neared the smoking area.
“This is going to be a real blaze!” Bud said.
“And no lookout station around here, either,” Tom muttered anxiously.
Tongues of orange flame could be seen through the smoke, leaping from tree to tree. The fire was spreading toward the main park road.
