Life by life you gained experience, but even so, the wealth of choices—of actions and associates—was daunting. A soul lives numerous lives before graduating from infant soul to being what I like to call a fledgling soul.
At that point you began to reach in life. But that reach was conservative. You interpreted the world narrowly and cautiously. You felt threatened by people who acted or spoke outside the rules you learned from your parents, and on occasion you responded brutally. (Many inquisitors and witch burners have been fledgling souls.) Not that most fledgling souls are brutal: The kindly but dogmatic policeman or teacher is often a fledgling soul. Fledgling souls can be devoted parents and considerate neighbors, but they’ll insist strongly on behavior that fits their views of right and wrong. Live and let live is most definitely not their motto.
After a number of lives at the fledgling level, you graduated to being what might be called a young soul. You’d gained confidence, and planned more ambitious lives, aiming for a higher level of success. Spirituality seldom plays an important role in the thinking of a young soul, though religion often does. Most of the material advances of the physical plane are developed and produced by young souls. Most politicans and big-league athletes are young souls. A great majority of tycoons are. Although far more often than not, the young soul does not succeed in making it big. In any case, important lessons are learned.
The young soul motto is “do it my way,” but young soul motives tend to be different than those of fledgling souls.
When you completed your cycle of young soul lives, you graduated again, becoming a mature soul. At that point you knew, deeply and fundamentally, that there is more to life than material success. Mature souls are inclined to “soul searching,” and to agonizing over issues of justice. They may be inclined toward social reform.
Eventually we graduate to the old cycle. As an old soul, you may be interested in reform, but you’re less likely to be driven by that interest. You are much more willing to “live and let live,” and you’re even less likely to be focused on material success. And when we complete the old cycle, we graduate from what the Hindus think of as the wheel of rebirth.
At this point I must make a disclaimer. Prior to the midlife crisis, a person, even an old soul, will be more or less under the influence of false personality, accrued in childhood under the pressures of the environment—notably family and society. A personality more or less at odds with the “true” personality, which we select for the life before being born into it. But even in children, the experienced viewer can commonly recognize the true soul age on brief acquaintance.
Tilly the Toiler: Jesus taught in brief parables, and Buddha sometimes taught without words. But you’re pretty gabby.
Dove: [ϑ ] True on all counts. Jesus the man taught mostly simple, unsophisticated people, in terms meaningful to them. Later, as the Christ, an incarnation of the Infinite Soul, he scarcely taught at all, excepting his disciples. However, he powerfully changed many others by his presence, his vibrations. The term “good vibes” is more than slang, and an avatar’s vibes are far better than good.
I am a human being, teaching humans of much greater sophistication than Jesus did. The viewpoints and attitudes of today’s humans have been influenced through cultural osmosis. They are the beneficiaries of centuries of human strivings and experience. Their inner worlds have been penetrated and transformed by seepage from quantum mechanics, chaos theory, molecular biology and so forth. Even though most have only a vague sense of those subjects.
Thus today’s people benefit most from a different teaching style than that of Jesus. His teachings are not obsolete, but in important respects, humankind has changed.
And of course, what Jesus taught has been distorted by the cultures and agendas of those who reported it, and again and again by those who passed it on, and interpreted it.
