Religious Folklore. Encyclopedia Of American Folklore

There are a large number of folk genres, such as legends, jokes, verbal art (including
sermons—see Lawless 1988; Rosenberg 1989), foodways, family traditions, material
culture, and the like, that can be found both in and outside of religious settings. The study
of any such “ordinary folklore” that happens to have religious aspects or sacred overtones can well be described as religious folklore (Danielson 1986). Well-known examples
would include Mormon saints’ legends and ethnic religious holiday traditions.
