Remarque, Erich Maria (1898–1970)

German novelist. He was a soldier in World War I. His All Quiet on the Western
Front
(1929), one of the first anti-war novels, led to his being deprived of German
nationality. He lived in Switzerland 1929–39, and then in the USA.
