Appleton, Victor – Tom Swift Jr 02 – And His Jetmarine

Then amid excitement and hubbub from the other diners, who rushed over, Chow related his suspicions.

“I ain’t done nothing,” the prisoner protested as he was led away to headquarters.

Chow immediately telephoned to Tom. After telling the young inventor what had happened, Chow warned, “Brand my six shooter, but I think there’s a big gang around Shopton what’s out to get you, Tom.”

“Thanks, Chow. I’ll be careful. Right now, I’m going down to headquarters.”

Tom was eager to get a look at the man who possessed the dog’s-head coin.

He drove speedily to headquarters and raced up the granite steps in front of the building three at a time. When he told the desk sergeant why he was there, the officer ushered Tom into the cell block.

“The man says his name’s Trebar,” the sergeant said as they walked along.

“He’s in the next cell.”

Tom immediately recognized the prisoner. He was the man whom Dansitt had picked up in his plane!

“Sergeant,” Tom said excitedly, “this man is friendly with a guy named Dansitt who nearly ran me down with a plane.”

Trebar scowled as Tom queried, “Where did Dansitt take you that day?”

The prisoner turned to the officer. “Do I have to answer this kid’s questions?”

“You’d better. Several people have asked the police to find Dansitt. If you tell us where he is, it may go easier with you.” Then the officer nodded to Tom. “Go ahead. Question him.”

“Where did Dansitt take you?” Tom pressed.

The man sat back on his bunk, lit a cigarette, and gave a half-smirk. “Okay, I’ll tell all,” he said.
