Appleton, Victor – Tom Swift Jr 05 – And His Atomic Earth Blaster

Quickly he went to the phone and dialed Bud at the underground hangar.

“Bud, do you recall seeing the blueprints for the South Pole blaster when you came to my lab this morning, just before we went out to Pine Hill?”

“No, I don’t think so,” replied Bud slowly. “Why? Is anything wrong?”

“I hope not,” Tom said in a worried voice. “But I seem to have mislaid them.”

“I’ll come over and help you hunt,” his chum offered.

“Okay,” Tom replied, and after hanging up, searched all the shelves but did not find the blueprints.

Next, he telephoned Miss Trent.

“I can’t find the blueprints for the new South Pole blaster,” he explained.

“Please look in the office and see if you can find them in my desk or any of the file cabinets. Try Dad’s desk, too.”

“Do you want to hold on while I look?” asked the secretary.

“No, take your time and search carefully. If you find the drawings, call me right back.”

Without waiting for her report, he contacted the maintenance department and talked to the janitor who had cleaned up his office the night before. But the janitor, too, had no recollection of having seen the blueprints.

A THREAT OF REVENGE 79

Just as Tom was hanging up the phone, Bud walked into the lab.

“Any luck?” he inquired.

“Not so far.”

Anxiously the two boys proceeded to give every drawer and storage compartment in the lab a thorough going-over. But they had found no trace of the blueprints by the time Miss Trent called back to report that her search had been a vain one.

As he put the phone down, Tom turned to his friend with a grim expression.
