Appleton, Victor – Tom Swift Jr 14 – And His Electronic Retroscope

None of the objects bore any mathematical space symbols. But one small carved figure of a turtle showed the date of a.d. 821 in Mayan numerals.

“This place may be older than I thought,” Tom announced. “Of course many of these objects could have been made before the period of the wall carving and brought here.”

“It’s amazing-absolutely amazing,” Jack declared. “I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”

When Tom had finished his examination, Max carefully heaped up the dirt again so as to cover his secret trove. Then the group started back through the narrow passageway leading to the outer room of the cave.

Frenchy was waiting patiently when they reached the giant’s living quarters.

“See anything interesting?” he asked with a grin.

“Pardner, we sure did!” Chow declared enthusiastically. The ex-ranch cook burst into a colorful, though confusing, description of the huge carved warrior and the hidden treasure chamber. “Enough to scare a law-abidin’ hombre out of a year’s growth.”

Chow was interrupted by a sudden screech from the parrot. Max looked up, instantly alert. As the

bird continued to squawk, his master made a dash toward the cave entrance.

“I’ll bet an iguana there’s some snooper out there!” the giant growled angrily.

Tom followed at his heels, with Jack Murray close behind. They emerged from the cave just in time to see the upper half of a slender figure disappearing among the ferns and foliage.

“That’s him!” Max shouted. “That’s the skinny guy I was telling you about!”
