Appleton, Victor – Tom Swift Jr 16 – And the Cosmic Astronauts

“Yes. I’m sure Whaley is an agent in this country for Li Ching, and knows all about the theft of the Sea Charger.”

When the two boys arrived at the cove, their companions, including Sandy and Phyl, were full of questions. Tom and Bud gave a toned-down report of Whaley’s capture, making no mention of the bomb, to avoid frightening anyone.

“I’m glad the police have him,” Sandy remarked. “Now we won’t have to worry.”

A short time later the party broke up and Tom sailed the ketch back to Shopton.

Early the following morning Police Chief Slater called Tom at Enterprises.

“Whaley still won’t admit he knows Li Ching,” the chief reported. “But you’ll be interested in this development. We learned from Interpol that Li Ching does employ a man named Olin. He’s probably Olin Whaley.”

“Good clue,” Tom said. “Thanks for letting me know.”

During the next few days the young inventor plunged into work on the design of his new “sailing” spaceship. He kept at the project for hours 162 COSMIC ASTRONAUTS

without a break, as he always did when fired with enthusiasm for some new scientific idea. Finally he finished the exterior.

While he worked on the interior, Arv Hanson handcrafted a small metal-and-plastic model from Tom’s blueprints to show how the new craft would look. Mr.

Swift was very favorably impressed.

“I’ve designed it, Dad, to carry as many as eight persons,” Tom explained.

“The control cabin will be up front, with another compartment and observation port at the rear, joined by a connecting passageway.”
