Appleton, Victor – Tom Swift Jr 16 – And the Cosmic Astronauts

“Boy, how’s this for taxi service!” Bud exclaimed as he and Tom hurried out of the gate to join the girls.

“Pretty nice,” Tom agreed, and added with a wink at Bud, “Our chauffeurs aren’t bad, either!”

“You said it! Remind me to write the taxi company for a formal introduction,”

Bud quipped.

Sandy and Phyl pretended not to hear, but were enjoying the boys’

admiration. Both girls were attractively dressed for the outing in sports clothes that set off their June suntans. They had brought along a huge picnic basket and large tote bags containing towels and swim suits.

“Hmmm, what’s for chow?” Bud said, prying into the basket playfully.

“More than you’ll find by peeking in there,”

Sandy replied with a giggle as they drove off.

“What does that mean?” Tom wondered out loud.

“Never mind, it’s a secret,” Phyl answered. “And that’s not the only one, either!”

At the boys’ puzzled expressions, Sandy and Phyl were unable to keep from laughing. But neither would explain their mysterious remarks. Tom and Bud tried unsuccessfully to wangle clues, but failed.

A ten-minute drive brought them to the Shopton Yacht Club on Lake Carlopa. Sandy kept her sleek little sailboat-christened the Mary Nestor, Mrs.

Swift’s maiden name-moored in the club’s boat basin.

“Hey! Where’re you going?” Tom asked in surprise as the two girls walked right past the Mary Nestor.

“You’ll see!” Sandy said calmly.

Bursting with curiosity, Tom and Bud followed the girls. They continued past the boat basin to the docks where larger craft were moored. Both boys were astounded when their two guides stopped beside a beautiful thirty-foot ketch.
