Tom agreed to be careful, although he took the situation calmly. The young inventor had become used to coping with dangerous enemies ever since his amazing scientific exploits had first catapulted him into the public eye.
In his first adventure, Tom had fought for his life against a gang of South American rebels aiming to seize a priceless radioactive-ore deposit. Only recently, Tom had struggled to save the Swifts’ phantom satellite base from capture by the asteroid pirates.
The following day Ames glumly reported to Tom that neither the devil doll nor the package wrappings had yielded any promising clues.
“Only one thing I can tell you for sure, skipper,” Ames said. “That figure is an authentic African carving.”

He added that both the United States Postal Inspectors and the FBI were trying to trace the senders.
From the security office, Tom drove to the Enterprises infirmary. He was glad to hear from Doc Simpson that Bud had completely recovered.
“But I’m going to keep him here another day for observation,” Doc added. “By the way, I’ve identified the stuff from that capsule. It’s an odorless gas that paralyzes the nervous system.”
“Good grief!” Tom shuddered. “How come Bud and the others weren’t killed!”
“Sheer luck. The seal around the pen socket wasn’t tight, so most of the gas probably leaked off into the open air while Bud was carrying the figure to your office. I imagine there was only a tiny amount to begin with-just enough to kill you the next time you used the pen.”
