Appleton, Victor – Tom Swift Jr 22 – And His Repelatron Skyway

He hurried back to the table and told Tom and the girls about the call. “Of course, it may be some nut,” he ended, “but I’d sure like to find out.”

Sandy’s blue eyes widened with alarm. “Oh, Bud,” she exclaimed, “please don’t! It may be a trap!”

Phyl, too, expressed concern.

“What do you think, Tom?” Bud asked.

“I don’t know. We could call the police and let them check first, I suppose.”

“That might scare off our informant,” Bud pointed out. “Even if all this is on the level, the man must have some reason for keeping under cover or he would have come to see me.”

Tom nodded thoughtfully. “Suppose the two of us go together-but I’ll call Ames first.

That is, if the girls don’t mind waiting for us.”

Seeing that the boys were determined, both Sandy and Phyl begged to be taken along. Tom and Bud, however, flatly refused to risk their safety. After the boys had promised to be cautious and to return as quickly as possible, the girls agreed to wait for them at the yacht club.

Tom and Bud hurried to the reception room, where Tom paused long enough to call Harlan Ames. He told the security chief about the mysterious telephone message and added, “If I don’t report back to you by nine-thirty, Harlan, get the police and come after me.”

Ames hesitated uneasily. “Sure you’re doing the right thing, skipper?”

“Let’s say I think it’s worth taking a chance. If our enemy’s tied in on this deal, we might pick up a good lead.”

“Okay. But please, Tom-watch your step.”

“Don’t I always?”
